ISLAMABAD: The M-1 motorway connecting Islamabad and Peshawar has been closed to all traffic in both directions from the Islamabad Toll Plaza to the Chachh Interchange, according to sources.
Sources said heavy trailers were parked along the route, resulting in the closure of the motorway and suspension of traffic movement.
According to the National Highways and Motorway Police, the Islamabad Toll Plaza, Fateh Jang, Tarnol, Sangjani, Brahma Bahtar, Burhan, Hazara Motorway, Ghazi and Chachh interchanges on the M-1 will also remain closed.
Motorway Police have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and use available alternative routes.
Authorities have also decided to close both carriageways of the M-14 motorway from Hakla to Kundal. Meanwhile, the N-5 GT Road has been closed at Attock Khurd.
Sources said the roads are likely to remain closed until further orders.
Separately, reports indicate that heavy traffic and cargo vehicles travelling from Lahore to Islamabad have been barred from entering the federal capital via the M-2 motorway. The GT Road has reportedly been designated as an alternative route for heavy vehicles.
Mobile Networks and Internet to Face Blackout in Major Cities on Sept 26–27
Meanwhile, the authorities have decided to suspend mobile phone and internet services in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, as well as the Attock district, on September 26 and 27, 2026, in response to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) anticipated long march.
According to an ARY news report, the decision was finalized during a high-level security meeting held to review law and order maintenance and security concerns. Alongside the communication blackout, authorities have also decided to close major highways, the Grand Trunk (GT) Road, and motorways.
The National Highways and Motorway Police announced that key routes leading toward the federal capital are being closed from Wednesday evening. Motorway M-1 is closed in both directions from the Islamabad Toll Plaza to the Chachh Interchange, and Motorway M-14 is closed in both directions from Hakla to Kundal. Additionally, GT Road (N-5) is closed for traffic in both directions at Attock Khurd.
These pre-emptive measures are being implemented to maintain public safety and manage security arrangements ahead of the arrival of protest convoys from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa led by the provincial Chief Minister.
