PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has blamed the provincial government for the failure of talks between the federal government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), accusing the PTI-led administration of failing to take ownership of the war against terrorism.

In a statement posted on X, Kundi accused the PTI government of acting as a “facilitator of terrorism” and said its failure to take responsibility for the fight against terrorism raised serious questions about its approach to protecting the people.

He said the actions and repeated compromises of the provincial administration raised questions about whether it was enabling an environment where terrorists could operate freely. Kundi also described the provincial government’s retreat from its security commitments as a “shameful” act of cowardice, saying the development was particularly concerning as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was facing serious security challenges.

The governor’s remarks came after Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the KP government had backed out of commitments agreed during negotiations with the federal government.

Naqvi said the KP government had agreed to sign a written agreement and submit an implementation plan within 72 hours, mainly covering counterterrorism measures. The proposed agreement included reconsideration of the Police Act 2026 in view of the security situation and keeping security matters free from political interference.

According to Naqvi, the commitments also included preventing terrorists from operating freely or finding safe havens, condemning the TTP, TTA and other terrorist groups, supporting the national policy on Afghan refugees and providing substantial funding for counterterrorism and police operations.

He further said the agreement covered provincial ownership of counterterrorism measures, cooperation with the armed forces, security decisions in former FATA and merged districts, and implementation of the National Action Plan.

Naqvi said the KP government backed out of these commitments during the final stage of negotiations and stressed that security matters should not be politicised while the province was facing a war-like situation.
