TEHRAN: Iran has expressed full support for China’s proposal for regional collective security, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Tuesday.
In a statement, Ghalibaf said that China’s emphasis on adopting collective security reflects the same principle that Iran has long advocated. “The countries of the region should take their future into their own hands.
Real stability can only come when a new security structure is established that grows from within this region, and Iran is ready for it,” the Speaker stated. Ghalibaf added that Tehran has consistently urged regional countries to reduce their reliance on powers from outside the region and to build security arrangements through cooperation.
The remarks come after Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward a four-point strategy for establishing a new security framework in the Middle East. During his meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Wednesday, President Xi said a security architecture based on “common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable” principles should be established.
