Meta-owned Instagram is reportedly working internally on a new feature called Read-Only Mode, which would allow users to browse content on the platform without leaving visible traces of their activity.
According to media reports, technology leaker and reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi shared details and screenshots of the potential feature on X.
The information suggests that users with Read-Only Mode enabled would be able to browse Instagram content but would not be able to like or comment on posts, send messages, follow accounts or view Stories.
This would allow users to view content without generating the usual visible activity associated with their accounts.
Reports suggest that the feature could potentially be considered for Instagram Plus accounts. However, Instagram has clarified that Read-Only Mode is currently only an internal experiment and is not being tested publicly.
An Instagram spokesperson told a technology website that the feature is part of an internal exploration and is not currently undergoing external testing. As a result, there is no confirmation about whether or when it could be officially launched.
Instagram has also not provided further details about potential safety concerns surrounding the feature or whether it could be tested with users in the future.
