Starting the day with a balanced breakfast can provide the body with essential energy and nutrients. However, not every food commonly eaten at breakfast is equally healthy.

Some popular choices can contain high amounts of sugar, unhealthy fats or refined carbohydrates, making them less suitable for daily consumption.

Sugary cereals are among the foods that should be consumed with caution. Although they are often considered a convenient breakfast option, many commercially available cereals contain high levels of added sugar while offering relatively little nutritional value.

Low-sugar porridge or homemade granola can be healthier alternatives, as they can provide more fibre and other essential nutrients.

Flavoured yoghurt may also appear to be a healthy choice, but many commercially available varieties contain added sugar and artificial ingredients.

Regular consumption can increase calorie intake and affect blood sugar levels. Plain yoghurt topped with fresh fruit or a small amount of honey can provide protein and probiotics while keeping added sugar lower.

Processed meats such as sausages are another common breakfast choice, particularly for people looking for quick and convenient meals. However, these products can contain high amounts of sodium, fat and preservatives. Frequent consumption of processed meat has been associated with an increased risk of various health problems. Eggs or smoked salmon can serve as alternative sources of protein.

Fruit drinks should also be consumed carefully. Some packaged or artificially prepared fruit drinks contain little or no natural fibre and may have added sugar, which can cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly.

Eating whole fresh fruit is generally a better option, while homemade juice without added sugar can also be considered.

Overall, choosing less processed and more nutrient-rich foods instead of items high in added sugar and refined ingredients can contribute to a more balanced breakfast and help support energy levels throughout the day.
