ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to import 18 liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes to meet the country’s gas requirements during the winter months from November to February, according to sources.

Sources said the government would prioritise the import of cheaper LNG from Qatar. However, if supplies from Qatar could not begin in time, the government would purchase cargoes from the spot market to meet demand.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been briefed on the expected gas supply and demand situation during the winter season.

The country’s total domestic gas availability is projected to remain around 1.4 billion cubic feet per day, while Punjab alone could require up to one billion cubic feet per day during the winter months, sources said.

They added that domestic gas supplies would be insufficient to meet even household demand during the winter season, highlighting the need for imported LNG to bridge the supply gap.

The planned imports are aimed at helping the government manage the anticipated shortfall and maintain gas supplies during the peak winter demand period.
