The feature, introduced on Thursday, allows users to check fuel prices at nearby petrol stations directly through the app, making it easier to compare prices before refuelling.

According to a statement from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, drivers can now open Google Maps, search for nearby petrol stations and view current petrol and diesel prices.

Chancellor John Healey said the move would make it easier for motorists to find the best prices at the pump, while acknowledging that it would not resolve all the challenges caused by rising fuel costs.

The government said the Fuel Finder scheme was introduced following a recommendation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to improve price transparency and help motorists access more competitive fuel prices.

The move comes days after diesel prices in the UK reportedly exceeded £2 ($2.64) per litre for the first time, adding to pressure on motorists already facing higher energy costs.
