US technology giant Amazon has laid off hundreds of employees in another round of job cuts, targeting its stores unit, which manages the company’s main e-commerce website.
According to media reports, the latest layoffs are part of a series of smaller workforce reductions following a broader restructuring drive that began last year and continued through January, resulting in around 30,000 corporate job cuts.
A person familiar with the matter said Amazon had laid off fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees in the latest round.
The company has confirmed the recent job cuts. In an emailed statement, an Amazon spokesperson said the company had made changes to certain parts of its stores business.
Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos said in an interview with Fox News that continued job cuts had been necessary because the company hired too many employees during the Covid-19 pandemic.
