The All Pakistan Goods Transporters Association has announced a wheel-jam strike from October 10 if the government fails to accept their demands.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the association chaired by its president, Nabeel Mahmood Tariq. Senior Vice President Haji Irfan Sultan, Vice President Mumtaz Ali Khan, Mirza Arshad Iqbal and other office-bearers attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the transporters demanded relief under their charter of demands. They called for the immediate release of containers detained during protests and sit-ins and demanded compensation of Rs20,000 and Rs35,000 for the affected vehicles.
The association also called for an end to the stopping and fining of vehicles over sales tax invoices and demanded a reduction in diesel prices.
The transporters further demanded that the federal and provincial governments honour commitments made during their previous strike and provide the promised relief.
The association warned that if their demands were not addressed, goods transport operations across the country would be completely suspended from October 10.
The transporters said they would proceed with the strike unless the government took steps to address their concerns and fulfil the commitments made to the sector.
