American Dermatologists Dr. Annette Zernick and Dr. Shamsa Kanwal, said that nails are the first to warn about physical health, and sometimes symptoms should not be ignored.
1.Curving nails: Lung and heart disease
If the fingers swell and become round from the front and the nails start curving downwards like an inverted spoon, it is called ‘clubbing’ in medical terms. This usually happens due to a long-term lack of oxygen in the blood. This symptom appears due to serious lung diseases and infections of the inner part of the heart.
2. Sinking nails: Anemia
If the nails sink inwards like a spoon from the middle, it is a clear indication of severe iron deficiency and anemia (anemia) in the body. Iron deficiency weakens the tissues that connect the nail to the finger.
3. Black or brown lines: Skin cancer
Never ignore a black or brown line that suddenly appears on the nail without any injury. According to Dr. Zarnik, this can be a sign of melanoma under the nail, which is the deadliest type of skin cancer. If not diagnosed in time, this cancer can quickly spread to other parts of the body.
4. Brittle and peeling nails: Thyroid disorder
In addition to frequent hand washing or use of nail polish remover, brittle and peeling nails can be a sign of thyroid disease.
This disease slows down the body’s metabolism, due to which the protein that makes up the nails, keratin, cannot be formed properly. Apart from this, a deficiency of zinc, biotin and vitamin B12 also causes it.
5. Discoloration: Infection or lack of oxygen
Redness or swelling around the nail indicates an infection of the skin around the nail, caused by bacteria entering through nail biting or a cut.
Blue or yellowing: Blue nails indicate a severe lack of oxygen in the body, while yellowing indicates liver or respiratory diseases.
