ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Wednesday approved the formation of a steering committee to oversee the country’s wheat import mechanism and assess provincial requirements, according to an official statement.
The committee, to be chaired by the deputy prime minister, will evaluate the need for wheat imports and formulate an operational framework for procurement in line with the requirements of the provinces.
According to the statement, the steering committee will comprise relevant federal ministers, federal secretaries, the chief secretaries of all four provinces, and the chairman of the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).
The decision was taken during an emergency virtual meeting of the ECC chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.
The meeting reviewed the proposed wheat import system and discussed provincial demand and procurement requirements. Federal ministers, senior government officials and representatives of relevant institutions also attended the meeting, the statement added.
