A few months after social media personality Dr Nabiha Ali Khan had publicly admitted that there were serious issues in her marriage, she officially began the khula process by sending legal dissolution papers to her husband Haris Khokhar.
A video of Dr Nabiha signing legal documents and putting her thumb impressions was shared on her Facebook page. The caption of the post read “Khula ke papers bhjwa diye Haris ko” (Papers were sent to Haris for Khula), and the video quickly became popular on social media, and there was a lot of online discussion regarding it.
The clip was accompanied by an emotional voice-over that was critical of men who allegedly cheated on wives, yet treated other women with respect. It also discussed the increasing number of khula and divorce cases, emphasising that the women do not come to court or approach for khula without a good reason.
This message stated that women did not have to take the blame for all broken marriages and should have the choice to walk away when a marriage is cruel, humiliating and unfaithful. Dr Nabiha said in the video that she hoped no woman ever would be faced with such a situation after marriage.
She said she hoped that no woman would ever be subjected to a husband’s degrading treatment. The development came after the couple’s marital problems came to light. In a previous television appearance, Dr Nabiha had disclosed that her marital life was in trouble and that divorce was a possibility.
She also said that if the marriage does not survive, then it would be the responsibility of Haris Khokhar’s family. Haris acts differently with Nabiha when his family is present. She asked her why his family would have preferred another woman when he had married her.
