Serious controversy ignites in the inner circles of the Indian Army and defense observers over the increasing political interference and ‘Saffronization’ in the armed forces.
In recent days, the decision to appoint Lt. Gen. (retd) NS Rajasubramani as the country’s new Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) after his retirement has given rise to a new debate. Sources claim that the sole reason for General Subramanian’s elevation to this high position is not his professional skills, but his close association with the Modi government and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his affinity for right-wing ‘Hindutva’ ideologies.
According to critics, this is an incident in the history of the Indian Army where a retired three-star officer has been activated by giving a fourth star solely on political grounds, which has damaged the traditional merit system of the army.
According to reports, the current Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi was the preferred candidate for the post, but the alleged “humiliating defeat” of the Indian Army in ‘Operation Sindoor’ in May 2025 weakened his position.
Informed sources say that the Indian army suffered heavy losses during this operation due to the incompetence and political expediency of the Indian leadership, the blame for which is being laid on CDS Anil Chauhan and General Dwivedi.
There is currently severe anxiety in the senior ranks of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. The officers are of the opinion that “religious reputation” and political loyalty are now being made the criteria for promotions instead of military ability. There is a general impression that merit is being sacrificed for religious fanaticism, which is affecting the harmony and professional discipline between the three-armed forces.
Questions are circulating in defense circles that is the apolitical character of the Indian army is ending. ‘Operation Sindoor’ have exposed the strategy of the Indian military leadership and their political affiliations, which may prove dangerous for India’s defense structure in the future.
