Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given in-principle approval for the second phase of the Model Village Project.

A meeting chaired by the Punjab Chief Minister reviewed the progress of the Model Village and Clean Water Projects related to the improvement of rural areas of Punjab. The meeting was informed that in-principle approval has been given to include 7,500 more villages for the second phase of the Model Village Project, while work is underway on 485 villages in the first phase.

According to officials, the project includes water supply, solar system, tube wells, drainage system, and cleaning of sewage ponds in the villages. The meeting directed that the cleaning of dirty water ponds in the villages should be completed by June 30, while the target has been set to complete the construction of septic tanks by August 31. Officials say that the water purified from the septic tanks will be used for irrigation.

It was further informed that the first phase of the model village project will cost more than Rs 59 billion. It was also directed to introduce a digital monitoring system to monitor the project and present before and after videos of each village.

The meeting emphasized the urgent repair and rehabilitation of damaged water filtration plants and ensuring the provision of clean water on a priority basis in polluted areas. A helpline 1336 has also been set up in this regard for the redressal of complaints.

During the meeting, instructions were also issued to complete the bottling plants in Khushab and Chishtian and the water supply scheme in Rajanpur by May 15.
