PESHAWAR: Nearly 37,000 classrooms in government schools across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are in poor condition and require either reconstruction or major repairs, according to official data.
The figures showed that a total of 36,967 classrooms across the province are either in need of complete reconstruction or classified as requiring extensive repairs.
In the settled districts, 16,934 classrooms require reconstruction, while another 14,632 classrooms need major repairs.
In the merged districts, 2,290 classrooms are awaiting reconstruction and 3,111 classrooms require major repairs.
In the settled districts, Swat has the largest number of classrooms that require reconstruction, with 2,625 classrooms that need reconstruction and 685 classrooms that require major repairs.
Mardan has 1,381 classrooms that require reconstruction and 871 classrooms that need substantial repair. Peshawar has 840 classrooms that need reconstruction and 845 classrooms requiring substantial repair.
The same is true for Nowshera, which has 805 classrooms that require reconstruction and 683 classrooms that require repairs, and Bannu, where there are 735 classrooms that need reconstruction and 794 classrooms that require substantial repairs.
In Charsadda, 733 classrooms require reconstruction and 723 need major repairs, while Lakki Marwat has 695 classrooms awaiting reconstruction and 839 requiring major repairs.
Situation in Merged Districts
The official figures also highlight the condition of school infrastructure in the merged districts.
North Waziristan has 352 classrooms requiring reconstruction and 443 needing major repairs. In Bajaur, 303 classrooms require reconstruction and 402 need repairs.
In Kurram, 275 classrooms require reconstruction and 426 require major repairs, while Khyber has 268 classrooms awaiting reconstruction and 364 needing repairs.
Similarly, Mohmand has 239 classrooms requiring reconstruction and 317 needing major repairs.
In the Upper South Waziristan region, there are 172 classrooms that require reconstruction, while 220 classrooms need repair. The figure in the Orakzai region shows that 130 classrooms require reconstruction and 192 classrooms require repair.
The data in the Lower South Waziristan region indicates that 96 classrooms require reconstruction and 174 classrooms require repair.
This data indicates that there is an infrastructure problem for the government schools in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region.
