ISLAMABAD: Opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai questioned the Speaker’s role as an impartial custodian of the house and said that he should not support the government while debating matters with opposition members.

The National Assembly session became heated when bitter words were exchanged between Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. According to media reports, during the session, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, while talking to the Speaker, said, “Yesterday you answered my words, you are the Speaker, you don’t have to answer our words, I answer your words within the realm of ethics.”

He further said that the Speaker made different remarks while referring to one of his speeches, while he delivered his speech in Chaman in Pashto. Achakzai said, “I consider someone a Pashto to be a duty.” He also said that he had said in his speech that in some cases, the system is weak and decisions should be made through Panchayats at the local level.

He addressed the Speaker and said that the difference between the positions of people belonging to different political parties and his position is clear, and according to him, some issues are being given the wrong narratives. During the session, this dialogue created tension in the House; however, later efforts were made to normalize the situation.
