WhatsApp is working on a new feature under which users will be able to make voice or video calls only through their username instead of their phone number.

This feature will allow users to communicate while maintaining privacy.

‎According to reports, WhatsApp will allow users to make calls by searching for the username directly in the Calls tab in the future and there will be no need to share the phone number during this. If the desired username is found, it will appear in the search results and the user will also be able to see basic information according to their privacy settings.

‎However, there is a prerequisite for this feature: you will be able to call any username only if you either have an existing chat with that person, or they have not enabled a security feature called ‘username key’.

‎Username has an additional passcode security that, when enabled, is told to the person calling for the first time, otherwise the call will not be possible. According to WhatsApp, all calls made through username will be secured with end-to-end encryption.

‎This feature is currently in the development phase and will be released for iOS users first in an upcoming update.
