PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has arrested a Communications and Works (C&W) Department employee and a contractor in an alleged embezzlement scandal involving billions of rupees in losses to the national exchequer.
The suspects identified as C&W employee Ejazul Haq and contractor Muhammad Zubair, were produced before the court of Judge Muhammad Hamid Mughal, which granted NAB a seven-day physical remand of the accused for investigation.
During the hearing, NAB Special Prosecutor Habibullah Baig told the court that Ejazul Haq, an employee of the C&W Department in Kohistan, was arrested on a NAB warrant.
According to the prosecution, Haq allegedly acted in collusion with the main accused in the case, Qaiser Iqbal and illegally withdrew Rs 1.126 billion from bank accounts, allegedly misappropriating the funds.
The prosecution further alleged that contractor Muhammad Zubair, who owns a construction company, opened accounts in his name at two private banks in Dasu. He allegedly withdrew Rs113.8 million from the national exchequer through illegal means and deposited the amount into his personal accounts.
NAB alleged that the suspects were involved in a wider scheme that caused substantial financial losses to the national exchequer.
After hearing the arguments, the court granted NAB a seven-day physical remand of both suspects to facilitate further investigation into the alleged financial irregularities. The investigation is continuing.
