PESHAWAR: The repatriation process for undocumented immigrants, particularly Afghan nationals, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is in full swing, with over 625,000 Afghans having made the journey back to their home country so far, according to the interior ministry on Wednesday.

The interior ministry says the majority of these returns have occurred at the Torkham border crossing, where around 616,000 Afghan nationals have crossed back into Afghanistan.

The ministry report said that more than 594,000 of these individuals voluntarily went to their homeland.

Since this effort began in September 2023, Pakistan authorities have formally deported a total of 31,474 Afghan refugees. Particularly, among those deported, 9,830 individuals had Afghan Citizen Cards (ACC).

“Repatriation is being carried out with the collaboration of security and immigration agencies to ensure a safe and orderly return,” The statement read. The government asserts that this campaign is focused solely on individuals living in the country without legal documentation, and it follows both national laws and international protocols.
