WhatsApp is preparing to restrict access to its messaging service on older smartphones running outdated Android and iOS operating systems, potentially preventing affected users from logging into their accounts.
According to reports, the Meta-owned messaging platform is testing a new security feature through a server-side update. This means the restriction could be implemented directly on WhatsApp’s servers without requiring users to install a specific app update.
Users running outdated or unsupported operating systems are expected to receive warning notifications informing them that their devices no longer meet WhatsApp’s requirements. The warnings will be based on the phone’s operating system rather than the version of the messaging app installed.
Once the security measure is implemented, affected users may see a warning screen requiring them to update their phone’s operating system before logging back into WhatsApp. Users will not be able to bypass the restriction simply by dismissing the warning.
If a device cannot be updated to a supported operating system, users may have to switch to a newer smartphone to continue using the service.
