Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Interior Tariq Saeed Marwat has written a formal letter to the Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regarding what he termed as unconstitutional and illegal arrests.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has taken notice of the arrests and detentions of its members of the provincial assembly and cabinet ministers.
In his letter Marwat stated that the arrests of MPAs and provincial ministers are unconstitutional and illegal. The letter specifically mentions the recent arrests of Dr. Amjad Ali, Fazal Shakoor Khan, MPA Abdul Salam and MPA Sultan Room. The Special Assistant alleged that the assembly members have been arrested and detained without any legal justification or due process.
Marwat has demanded an immediate halt to the series of arrests and detentions of elected members of the assembly. He stated in the letter that if action against any assembly member is unavoidable in any case, it must be taken in accordance with legal requirements and constitutional procedure including taking the Speaker of the Assembly into confidence as per privilege laws.
Special Assistant Tariq Saeed Marwat has also sought a detailed report from the IGP Police regarding all incidents of arrests of MPAs. The IGP has been directed to prepare a comprehensive report on the arrests and submit it directly to the Special Assistant’s office without delay.
