ISLAMABAD: To review the prevailing situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a high-level meeting has been called at the Prime Minister’s House today (Saturday). As the federal government is expected to consider two options including “emergency plus” and governor’s rule in the province currently being ruled by the PTI.

 Sources said the meeting would review the province’s situation in detail and consider constitutional and administrative options before a final decision. Reports from national security institutions are also expected to be reviewed. According to sources, a proposal to impose an emergency in 12 districts of KP, including all districts of the former tribal areas, is under consideration.

The proposed measures aim to protect the lives and property of people in the province, while the possible use of special powers by the federal government is also expected to be discussed. The meeting will review the powers available under Articles 232 to 234 of the Constitution and the legal requirements for their use. Sources said representatives of the relevant stakeholders would participate in the consultation.

They further said that if an emergency is proposed, approval from the federal cabinet would be required. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to convene a cabinet meeting for this purpose. However, no final decision on imposing an emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been announced ahead of the meeting. Moreover, it has also been learnt that senior administrative officers posted in 12 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been directed to remain prepared for a possible imposition of an emergency.

Sources said authorities in the relevant districts had been instructed to make advance preparations. If an emergency is imposed, government officers may be appointed as administrators in the affected districts. The proposed administrators would oversee all administrative affairs in their respective districts, with government operations conducted under their supervision, sources added.
