PESHAWAR: The alleged voice recordings circulating in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) WhatsApp groups have sparked questions over the whereabouts of provincial lawmaker Abdul Salam Afridi, with claims that he may have gone into hiding voluntarily rather than being abducted.
The voice recordings, which are being circulated on social media and in PTI-linked WhatsApp groups, contain conversations among party workers discussing the disappearance of Afridi and other leaders.
According to the claims heard in the recordings, some PTI leaders and workers allegedly went into hiding to avoid arrest or possible detention. The recordings further suggest that the situation may be part of a political strategy aimed at generating public sympathy and creating the impression that party leaders are being abducted or forcibly disappeared.
The alleged conversations also claim that more PTI lawmakers and leaders could go into hiding in the coming days ahead of the party’s proposed long march, potentially portraying their absence as arrests or disappearances.
Earlier, PTI-affiliated social media accounts reported that party provincial lawmaker Abdul Salam Afridi from Mardan was allegedly abducted from his hujra. The reports, circulated on social media, claimed that Afridi was taken away from the premises by unknown persons. However, alleged voice recordings circulating in PTI WhatsApp groups appear to present a different account of the incident, with party workers reportedly discussing that Afridi and other leaders had gone into hiding voluntarily to avoid arrest.
