RAWALPINDI: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), HJ, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces (COAS & CDF) at General Headquarters (GHQ) Rawalpindi, on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, the prevailing regional security environment and the United Nations’ role in promoting international peace and security.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the two sides exchanged views on regional stability, the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, India’s abeyance of the Indus Waters Treaty and terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.

Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international peace and highlighted the country’s contributions to UN peacekeeping missions.

The Army Chief also appreciated the United Nations’ role under Secretary-General Guterres in promoting peace, stability and humanitarian cooperation.

The UN Secretary-General, in turn, paid tribute to the sacrifices and contributions of Pakistan and its Armed Forces in the war against terrorism and their participation in UN peacekeeping missions.

Guterres also acknowledged Pakistan’s continued commitment to international peace and security and specifically appreciated its efforts towards the peaceful resolution of regional conflicts, ISPR said.

The meeting comes amid ongoing regional security challenges, with both sides discussing issues affecting stability and prospects for peace in the region.
