WhatsApp has introduced new safety features aimed at protecting younger users and providing children with an age-appropriate experience on the messaging platform.
Under the new tools, parents will have access to several options to manage their children’s accounts. They will, for example, receive notifications when their children join or leave a WhatsApp group.
Parents will also be able to manage certain data preferences on their children’s accounts.
However, the company said in a blog post that parents will not be given access to read messages sent or received by their children.
Despite the new parental controls, children’s chats and calls will remain private and protected by end-to-end encryption, WhatsApp said.
The new tools will also allow parents to manage automated settings on their children’s accounts. Parents will be able to use a PIN to prevent children from changing settings that have been configured by them.
Parents will also be able to decide whether their children can use Channels and manage the settings available to children when using Meta AI.
WhatsApp said the changes come as governments around the world are increasing pressure on technology companies to take stronger measures to protect children online. The new parental tools will be rolled out to users worldwide over the coming weeks.
