BEIJING: Chinese scientists have developed a super-coating paint that can significantly reduce indoor temperatures during hot weather, potentially reducing reliance on air conditioners.
The cooling paint has entered production in China after being tested for six months at a factory in Hainan province, according to a report.
The coating uses radiative cooling technology, which does not require electricity or conventional cooling agents. The technology works by reflecting solar radiation and releasing heat, helping keep surfaces and indoor spaces cooler.
During trials, the coating reportedly helped maintain indoor temperatures at around 25 degrees Celsius, even during periods of intense heat.
The factory where the paint was tested had previously relied on water sprinkler systems to help control indoor temperatures. The new coating achieved a cooling effect without additional energy consumption, according to the report.
The paint can potentially be used on homes and public infrastructure, researchers said.
The coating was jointly developed by experts from China State Construction Ecological Development Group and the Harbin Institute of Technology.
A production plan has been drawn up to manufacture around 600,000 tonnes of the cooling paint annually.
Researchers estimate that the coating could have an average service life of up to 15 years, making it a potential option for improving heat management in buildings and public infrastructure.
