ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers may face another increase in power tariffs as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed a request for the monthly fuel price adjustment for the month of August.
According to the request, electricity prices could rise by Rs1.73 per unit under the proposed adjustment. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is scheduled to hear the CPPA’s request on September 29. If approved, the proposed increase would place an additional financial burden of approximately Rs29.5 billion on consumers.
The impact of the proposed adjustment would also extend to K-Electric consumers, according to the details provided in the request. During August, approximately 14.464 billion units of electricity were supplied to distribution companies (DISCOs).
The cost of electricity supplied to the DISCOs averaged Rs8.82 per unit during the month. The data submitted to the regulator showed that 37.84% of electricity generated in August came from hydropower. Local coal accounted for 10.88%, while imported coal contributed 15.59%.
Electricity generation from furnace oil stood at 2.15%, while local gas accounted for 7.04% and imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) contributed 8.48%. The proposed tariff adjustment is subject to NEPRA’s review and final decision following the scheduled hearing.
