WhatsApp has introduced three major changes to its account security features, aimed at strengthening user protection, improving authentication and providing more information about calls from unknown numbers.
As part of the security upgrade, the messaging platform is offering a longer password option instead of the traditional six-digit PIN used for two-step verification. The new password can contain a combination of letters, numbers and special characters, providing users with an additional layer of protection.
The update comes as WhatsApp continues to serve more than three billion users worldwide, making account security a key concern for the platform.
WhatsApp is also expanding its support for passkeys, which allow users to verify their identity using security features already available on their devices, including fingerprints, Face ID and screen locks. Unlike traditional passwords, passkeys can provide a more convenient and secure way to authenticate an account.
Previously, users could create one passkey for a WhatsApp account. The platform now allows multiple passkeys, which could be particularly useful for people who switch between Android and iOS devices. According to WhatsApp, more than one billion users have already created a passkey.
The third change focuses on calls from unknown numbers. On Android devices, WhatsApp will provide additional information about callers who are not saved in a user’s contacts, helping recipients decide whether to answer an unfamiliar call.
The information may include whether the caller’s number is from another country and whether the caller shares any WhatsApp groups with the recipient.
The latest changes are part of WhatsApp’s broader efforts to strengthen account security while giving users greater control and more information when interacting with unfamiliar contacts.
