PESHAWAR: Police in Khyber district have arrested a man allegedly operating fake social media accounts and using them to defame and blackmail citizens.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Zahid, was arrested in Landi Kotal, and a case has been registered against him at the Landi Kotal police station.

The First Information Report (FIR) alleged that the suspect created and uploaded objectionable pictures and videos on social media and subsequently demanded money from victims while allegedly threatening them.

Police said the suspect was traced and arrested following an investigation into a purported network of fake social media accounts. The inquiry was initiated on a complaint filed by Shah Fahad.

The FIR also contains allegations that the suspect was involved in damaging the reputation of citizens through the fake accounts and using the material to pressure or blackmail them.

Police said further investigation is underway, while efforts are continuing to identify and arrest other individuals allegedly linked to the network.
