PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued an alert for a new spell of monsoon rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab from 7 to 21 August, warning of urban flooding in several areas.
According to PDMA, both provinces are likely to receive rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms until 21 August.
Rain is forecast in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Kohistan, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda, Nowshera, Kohat, Kurram and Hangu.
PDMA warned of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Mardan and Swabi, and landslides in hilly districts. District administrations have been directed to take precautionary measures in vulnerable areas and to keep rivers, streams and rain drains under continuous watch.
PDMA has also issued an alert for the 6th spell of monsoon rains in Punjab. Rain is expected in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, D.G. Khan and other districts.
The authority warned of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore and slides in Murree, Galiyat and other mountainous areas. Relevant departments have been put on alert for flash flooding in rain drains.
PDMA has advised citizens and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from rivers and streams, and urged parents to keep children away from water channels, ponds and nullahs.
It also advised people to stay away from open electric wires and electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
