KARACHI: The Sindh government-produced film “Mera Lyari” has entered the race for consideration at the Academy Awards, a development being viewed as a significant achievement for Pakistan’s film industry.
The provincial government expressed hope that if the film secures an official Oscar nomination, it would become a historic milestone in the country’s cinematic journey.
The development was discussed during a meeting of the Film Board of the Information Department, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, where officials reviewed ongoing film projects, efforts to promote the provincial film industry and future strategies for growth.
The meeting also examined progress on collaborations with national and international OTT platforms, along with matters related to film screenings, distribution and wider promotion.
Officials briefed the meeting that the first phase of film projects launched under the Information Department had been successfully completed, while discussions with various streaming platforms and relevant organizations regarding exhibition and distribution were underway.
Sharjeel Inam Memon said the Sindh government was taking serious steps to promote film, culture, and creative industries. He added that cinema not only highlights cultural heritage and a positive national image internationally but also creates opportunities for employment, investment, and creative growth.
Further, he said that the aim of the government was to establish a modern film producing region in Sindh so that the talent of artists may be exhibited globally.
The meeting was also attended by Kashif Gulzar Sheikh, who was Information Secretary, Director General Information Moiz Pirzada, Director Films Hizbullah Memon, Film Board members Waqas Rizvi, Saleem Khan, Ehtesham Ansari, Rabb Nawaz, and other concerned officials.
