LOWER CHITRAL: Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have caused widespread damage in different areas of Lower Chitral, leaving one person dead, another missing, and damaging bridges and other infrastructure.
According to Rescue 1122 officials, the body of one person was recovered from the Burozh Gol stream, while a search operation is underway for another individual who was swept away by floodwaters.
The flooding occurred on August 3, 2026, after intense rainfall caused sudden rises in streams and nullahs, including Burozh, Gahiret Gol and Jaghur Gol, resulting in casualties and damage to public and private property.
Flood water took down two bridges, a gas station, and a University of Chitral bus in Burozh village. The currents and debris were responsible for damaging road links in the locality that caused transport disruption.
In Gahiret Gol, flood water and debris temporarily disrupted the flow of the Chitral River. People in the lower parts of Drosh were issued precautions via the mosque loudspeakers, warning those who lived along the rivers and streams to relocate to safer places.
The flood in Burozh Gol also damaged a fiber optic cable, which was responsible for causing disruption in internet service in various parts of Chitral. In Dom Shughur, flood water destroyed two high-tension electricity poles that provided electricity to Upper Chitral.
Meanwhile, Jaghur Gol, where flooding was recorded the previous day, experienced more flooding again on Monday. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of loss of life during the most recent occurrence.
Relief and assessment efforts continue in the affected region.
