SWAT: The number of people killed in a suicide bombing at Kabal Police Station in Swat district has risen to 17, officials confirmed Monday.
According to police, the victims include seven police personnel and 10 civilians. The blast, which took place inside the police station premises, also left several others wounded.
Police said three of the injured remain in critical condition and are being treated at local hospitals. Medical staff have been put on high alert to deal with emergency cases. Authorities have registered a case of the suicide attack at the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) police station. The FIR names unknown suspects and further investigation is underway to trace those behind the attack.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation in surrounding areas. Senior police and administrative officials visited the site and reviewed the security situation.
The attack has created panic among residents of Kabal and nearby areas. Following the incident, security has been tightened across Swat district, with additional checkpoints set up on entry and exit points.This is one of the deadliest attacks in Swat in recent months.
Officials say they are probing all possible angles, including links to banned outfits active in the region. Funeral prayers for the police personnel who lost their lives were offered with full honors, while civil administration has announced support for the families of civilian victims.
