Flood wreaked havoc in the north-eastern regions of Afghanistan, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 80 in various accidents. According to officials, more than 100 people are still missing after being swept away by floodwaters.
According to Afghan officials, several areas were affected by the severe floods that hit Nuristan province on Monday. Shops and business centres along the river in the provincial capital Parun were destroyed, leaving nothing but rubble and mud.
According to the Afghanistan Disaster Management Authority, 20 bodies have been recovered so far during rescue operations, while more than 80 injured people have been provided medical assistance. The affected people include residents of Parwan and other parts of Nuristan.
Authorities say the flash floods have caused severe damage to several hotels, dozens of shops and other properties. Large rocks and debris carried by the water have affected several parts of the city.
Afghan disaster officials have advised citizens to take precautionary measures in view of the possibility of more rain and storms. The public has been advised to stay away from riverbanks and areas where there is a risk of flooding.
