ISLAMABAD: The investigation into the murder of Group Captain Asim Tariq has made significant progress, with the woman present at the scene recording her statement before police. Investigators have also included WhatsApp conversations between the woman and the suspect as part of the evidence.

According to police officials, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect and the woman worked at the same organisation.

The two reportedly began communicating via WhatsApp about five days before the incident, during which the suspect allegedly offered to provide her with pick-and-drop transportation.

In her statement, the woman told investigators that she had left for work on the day of the incident, but the suspect allegedly tried to force her to accompany him to F-9 Park.

She said she managed to get off the motorcycle when an opportunity arose, after which the suspect allegedly assaulted her with the butt of a pistol.

Police said that Group Captain Asim Tariq arrived at the scene during the altercation and approached the suspect to inquire about the situation. According to investigative sources, the suspect claimed it was a family matter, prompting the officer to leave the area.

However, the sources said that after driving a short distance, Group Captain Tariq noticed through his vehicle’s mirror that the suspect was carrying a pistol. He then turned his vehicle around and returned to speak to the suspect again.

According to police sources, the suspect opened fire during the encounter, fatally shooting Group Captain Asim Tariq at the scene.

Police said the investigation is continuing from multiple angles, with further legal action to be taken in light of the evidence and witness statements collected so far.
