WASHINGTON: The United States President Donald Trump said that no tolls will be imposed on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz during a 60-day ceasefire period, adding that any future toll regime could only be implemented by the United States.

In a statement posted on his social media platform, Truth social,  Trump said no transit fees would be collected in the strategic waterway during the ceasefire and that no such charges were expected to be introduced after the period ends.

According to Reuters, Trump asserted that tolls could not be imposed without the consent of the United States, claiming that any future charges in the Strait of Hormuz would only be possible if enforced by Washington.

He argued that such a measure, if ever introduced, could serve as compensation for what he described as US security and stabilisation efforts in the Middle East.

Trump said the United States had acted as a “guardian angel” for the region and that its role in maintaining security and stability should be recognised.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, through which a significant share of global oil trade passes.

Any proposal involving transit fees, restrictions or disruptions in the waterway is closely watched by energy markets and international shipping stakeholders due to its potential impact on global trade and oil prices.
