OpenAI, the biggest name in the world of artificial intelligence, is now preparing to enter the smartphone market and is going to introduce its first phone to directly challenge Apple’s famous iPhone.
According to recent supply chain reports revealed by renowned technology analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the production of this phone is progressing faster than expected. Earlier, the production of this phone was expected in 2028, however, now this project looks ready to be launched in the market in the first 6 months of 2027.
If everything goes according to plan, the company plans to supply about 30 million units of this phone to the market during 2027 and 2028.
A unique phone that runs without applications According to experts, this will not be a traditional smartphone, but rather it is being called an ‘AI Agent Phone’, which instead of traditional mobile apps will have an advanced and integrated system that will automatically understand the user’s environment and needs.
The aim of this phone is to provide an experience where its sensors can simultaneously monitor the user’s location, activities, communications and surrounding conditions and make decisions through artificial intelligence.
To make this dream a reality, OpenAI needs to have complete control over both the phone’s hardware and software.
According to reports, this phone is likely to use a special chipset developed by MediaTek, which is based on the latest technology of the famous Taiwanese company TSMC. The responsibility of manufacturing this phone has reportedly been given to Laxin Precision Industry.
The phone will have 2 special artificial intelligence processors installed inside it, one of which will perform the tasks of seeing (vision) and the other of understanding language simultaneously.
In addition, an advanced camera unit and an advanced HDR system will also be included in it to see and understand the world better.
Apple’s designers’ services and market response OpenAI bought former Apple designer Jony Ive’s company ‘IO Products’ for $6.5 billion last year to make this project a success.
This new startup has so far brought more than forty key Apple employees and designers on board. This initiative by OpenAI has also alerted a large company like Apple, which has announced huge bonuses of up to $400,000 to retain key members of its iPhone design team.
Although Jony Ive and OpenAI chief Sam Altman have previously said they have no plans to make a device with a screen, and their first joint product is expected in early 2027 in the form of a smart speaker, a recent report confirms a major competition in the market.
