Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that Pakistan remains committed to actively participating in UN peacekeeping missions and further strengthening global peace efforts.
In a message on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, he said that our continued cooperation reflects Pakistan’s enduring commitment to international peace and security and multilateral principles.
The Prime Minister said that today, Pakistan, along with the international community, pays a huge tribute to the brave men and women who served under the flag of the United Nations.
He added that this day, celebrated every year, is a recognition of the undying services and sacrifices of the army, police and civil peacekeeping forces in achieving global peace and security in conflict-affected regions. He said that this year the day is being observed under the theme of ‘Invest in Peace’, which emphasizes the importance of continued political commitment and financial
cooperation for the promotion of sustainable peace and the protection of human lives around the world. This day is also celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Trust Supervision Organization, which began in Palestine in 1948.
The Prime Minister said that in the history of peacekeeping missions, more than 2 million men and women have served in more than 70 missions around the world.
Pakistan is among the longest-serving and leading countries in UN peacekeeping operations.
Since 1960, Pakistan has sent more than 235,000 personnel to more than 48 peacekeeping missions, including more than 500 women personnel.
‘It is a matter of great pride for us that Pakistan is today the 5th largest troop-contributing country in the world to UN peacekeeping missions.’ The Prime Minister said that these brave personnel serving around the world have made extraordinary sacrifices for humanity and global stability.
‘More than 4,400 personnel have lost their lives in the line of duty so far, including more than 181 Pakistani peacekeepers, which is a testament to their dedication.
