KATHMANDU: Zakia Ahmad created a new history as she became the first-ever woman from Afghanistan to summit the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest, which stands tall at an elevation of 8,848 meters above sea level.

Zakia climbed Mount Everest earlier today at around 7:20 a.m., as confirmed by expedition officials.

The 30-year-old Afghan woman is originally from Ghazni Province, but she sought asylum in Australia because of the worsening political and security environment in her homeland. As per reports, she obtained her climbing permit to Mount Everest using an Australian passport.

Her feat is receiving widespread appreciation as it is considered to be a landmark moment for Afghan women in international sports and mountaineering when opportunities for women in Afghanistan have become very limited.

In other news related to the world’s highest peak, Pakistani climber Salman Atiq has also been successful in summiting Mount Everest today.

It may be noted here that Salman Atiq comes from Islamabad, and this climb of his adds him to the list of 14 Pakistani mountaineers who have scaled the world’s highest mountain.
