CHARSADDA: A sad situation arose in the Shakur Bazaar area of Tangi tehsil of Charsadda district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when a poor vegetable vendor who borrowed the vegetables was allegedly mistreated by the district administration during anti-encroachment or other disciplinary actions.

According to sources, the affected cart owner was struggling to feed himself and his family in a state of extreme poverty. It is being said that the father of the said person is seriously ill with a stroke, and he was trying to sell vegetables on loan from the market in Shakur Bazaar to meet the needs of the house.

Eyewitnesses say that when the administration team reached the market, the person’s cart was treated harshly, as a result of which not only was his hard work wasted, but also his only source of livelihood was affected.

As soon as the incident was reported, there was intense anger and resentment among the residents of the area and social media users. The administration should take action against big businessmen and the influential land-grabbing mafia, not against the poor who are starving on the streets for just two meals a day.

At a time when inflation is skyrocketing, snatching the belongings of a laborer or subjecting him to humiliation is against humanity. The people of Tangi and civil society have strongly demanded that the incident be investigated immediately and that action be taken against the responsible officials.

The financial loss of the affected handcart owner should be compensated so that he can get his ailing father treated. The administration should be instructed not to let go of the grip of “humanity” and “ethics” while implementing the laws.

This incident reflects the bitter reality that while on one hand the state wants the rule of law, on the other hand, the lack of alternative accommodation or employment arrangements for the poor forces them to come to the streets. Such incidents widen the gap between the people and the institutions.
