ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting on energy sector reforms, directing authorities to prioritise consumer facilitation, reduce system losses, and accelerate the adoption of modern technology.

The prime minister emphasised the need to improve facilities for both industrial and domestic electricity consumers, while calling for urgent steps to significantly curb line losses through the upgradation of the transmission system. He underscored that enhancing efficiency in power distribution remains critical for long-term sustainability.

Highlighting the role of innovation, the premier instructed officials to promote the use of modern technologies across the energy sector, alongside expanding renewable energy projects to address Pakistan’s persistent power shortages.

He also directed the formulation of a comprehensive strategy aimed at stabilising electricity tariffs, noting that affordability for consumers must remain a central focus of reforms. In addition, he stressed the importance of improving digital services to facilitate easier bill payments and enhance overall consumer experience.

The meeting reiterated the government’s resolve to continue strict measures against electricity theft, terming it a major contributor to financial losses in the power sector. Ensuring an uninterrupted energy supply, the prime minister said, is essential for industrial growth and economic stability.

Officials briefed the meeting on various proposals, including recommendations related to electricity consumption patterns for domestic users and industries.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Minister for Power Owais Leghari, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan, and senior officials from relevant institutions.
