China sets world record by building world’s deepest underwater high-speed rail tunnel by China’s Shenjiang No. 1 Tunnel Boring Machine by building a 113-meter-deep underwater high-speed rail tunnel.

The tunnel is located in the Pearl River Estuary in southern China and is part of a major project of the long-distance Shenzhen Jiangmen Railways. When completed, the tunnel will further improve the rail network in the Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau Greater Bay Area.

The tunnel boring machine has a large cutter head at the front that continuously rotates to break rock and soil. Behind the cutter head is the machine’s assembly section, where workers install sections of tunnel lining, each about 2 meters wide. This allows excavation and lining to be done simultaneously to speed up the work.
