PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) experienced severe devastation in the year 2025 due to a series of natural disasters that resulted in significant loss of life and property across the province.
A report by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) indicated that 573 people died and 301 were injured as a result of these disasters.
The report detailed that several districts in the province were affected by floods, cloudbursts, lightning strikes, and the collapse of roofs. The hardest-hit area was the Buner district, where 256 people lost their lives, and 52 were injured. A total of 454 houses were destroyed, while 921 sustained partial damage due to heavy rains.
Other districts also reported significant casualties and damage. Specifically, 48 people died in Swat and Swabi, 45 in Shangla, 31 in Mansehra, 26 in Bajaur, 15 in Khyber, 10 in Malakand, 11 in Abbottabad, and 7 in Mardan.
According to the PDMA, 3,783 houses were either completely or partially destroyed due to various incidents. Additionally, 718 schools and 124 government buildings were damaged, severely impacting the educational and administrative infrastructure of the province.
The report further detailed that the fatalities included 167 men, 185 women, and 221 children. Moreover, 7,078 livestock were lost due to the disasters, adversely affecting the farming community.
The PDMA has warned that such incidents are increasing due to climate change, which poses ongoing threats to the province in the future.
