WASHINGTON: The White House has said that President Donald Trump’s first priority on Iran has always been diplomacy, he would not hesitate to use force if necessary.
Caroline Levitt, a spokesperson for the White House, announced in a media briefing that the ultimate authority to make decisions on issues related to Iran rests with President Trump.
On a different note, the US Department of State reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will brief key leaders of Congress today on the latest developments on Iran. As reported by Reuters, sources close to the matter have indicated that Rubio will brief lawmakers on the progress that has been made.
Earlier, on February 19, President Trump had given Iran a 10–15 day window to reach an agreement. Reports suggest that Trump may also address Congress regarding Iran’s nuclear program and potential military actions.
Trump warns of severe consequences for Iran if deal fails
Yesterday, US President Donald Trump dismissed reports that Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dennis Keane opposes potential military action against Iran.
Trump called these reports “fake news” because he claimed they contained complete falsehoods. He made it clear that he will have the final authority to decide all matters related to Iran.
Trump preferred to achieve an agreement with Iran but he informed that all diplomatic efforts will lead to disastrous results for Iran on the actual day of failure.
The warning comes ahead of a key meeting between U.S. and Iranian delegations on Thursday concerning Iran’s nuclear program. The meeting in Geneva will include US representatives Steve Cutkovic and Jared Kushner.
