ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to become the first country to sign the Digital and AI Compact as Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja Sunday departed for South Korea to attend the Global AI and Digital Summit.
She will present the country’s future roadmap for artificial intelligence (AI) and digital development. Although Pakistan does not currently have a dedicated regulatory structure specifically for AI, several policies, laws and rules introduced by the government address potential challenges associated with its use.
These measures include the National Cyber Security Policy 2021, the Pakistan Cloud First Policy 2022 and the CERT Rules 2023. Other relevant measures include sector-specific regulations such as the Critical Telecom Data and Infrastructure Security Regulations (CTDISR).
The South Korea’s summit will include a ministerial meeting focusing on artificial intelligence and digital inclusion in Pakistan. The signing of the Digital and AI Compact is expected to mark a significant step in Pakistan’s efforts to advance digital technology and AI cooperation.
During a dedicated session, Shaza Fatima is expected to outline Pakistan’s future roadmap for AI and digital development. She is also scheduled to meet a vice president of Google to discuss matters relating to digital technology and artificial intelligence.
Bilateral talks are also planned between the minister and a vice president of the World Bank. During the visit, she will share Pakistan’s perspective on expanding internet access and ensuring the availability of digital services to the public.
