ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) launches a massive solar-plus-battery project to lead the world in clean power generation and create thousands of jobs across the country.
Gulf News reported that the ground-breaking ceremony of the landmark project was performed by Sheikh Theyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Martyrs’ Affairs.
Masdar and EWEC are the joint developers of the initiative.
The huge undertaking will include a 5.2-gigawatt solar photovoltaic facility and a 19-gigawatt-hour battery storage installation to provide 1 gigawatt of clean power 24 hours a day at economically viable rates worldwide.
The AED 22 billion project is a significant new step along the UAE’s path to green and sustainable energy.
It is expected to cut carbon emissions by 5.7 million tonnes per year and create more than 10,000 jobs covering the sectors of engineering, construction, and technology.
By implementing a host of innovations such as virtual power plant systems, AI-based weather forecasting, and automated energy distribution, the endeavor is poised to become a worldwide benchmark for renewable energy infrastructure.
Sultan Al Jaber the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar said the establishment of such a landmark project is a key moment for the clean energy ambitions of the country.
“Its execution will not only provide the UAE’s sustainable energy model with a stronghold but also be the type of energy that is safe, trustworthy, and green to cater to the increasing worldwide demand,” he said.
