As temperatures soar during the summer months, many women face a common challenge: keeping their makeup fresh and intact throughout the day.

Beauty and skincare experts say that heat, humidity, sweat and air pollution are among the biggest factors that can cause makeup to melt, while also contributing to clogged pores, acne and skin irritation.

According to experts, the choice of makeup products is just as important as the application technique. Heavy products such as full-coverage matte foundations, thick cream concealers, oil-based formulas and heavily fragranced cosmetics can mix with sweat and pollution, increasing the risk of breakouts and skin sensitivity.

Dermatologists advise avoiding products containing large amounts of mineral oil, petroleum jelly, coconut oil, alcohol and heavy waxes, as these ingredients can interfere with the skin’s natural protective barrier and contribute to clogged pores.

While long-lasting and smudge-proof makeup remains popular, experts caution that such products may trap sweat, excess oil and bacteria against the skin, particularly during hot weather.

Individuals with acne-prone or sensitive skin are encouraged to use makeup sparingly and opt for products that allow the skin to breathe.

Lightweight alternatives such as tinted moisturisers, BB creams, water-based or gel-based formulations and non-comedogenic products are generally considered more suitable during heatwaves.

Experts also recommend applying foundation only where necessary to cover imperfections and using minimal amounts of powder.

Special caution is advised when using silicone-based and waterproof makeup products.

Although waterproof cosmetics can provide longer-lasting results, dermatologists note that some formulations contain synthetic chemicals and fragrances that may increase irritation and sensitivity, particularly when used daily in extreme heat.

Experts stress that consumers should pay close attention to product ingredients rather than focusing solely on makeup application techniques.

Choosing lightweight, skin-friendly products can help makeup last longer while reducing the risk of acne, irritation and other heat-related skin problems.
