KARACHI: To curb absenteeism and identify employees allegedly holding fake academic degrees, the Sindh government is introducing facial recognition technology for digital attendance and monitoring.
According to officials, the new attendance system is aimed at improving monitoring and ensuring transparency in employee attendance across the province. They maintained that the provincial department has received around 15,000 applications for early retirement from teaching and non-teaching staff, creating administrative and financial challenges for the Finance Division.
Officials said that the new system is aimed at improving transparency and accountability across the education department by ensuring that only authorized employees are marked present. Officials believe the technology will help prevent proxy attendance and strengthen oversight of staff performance.
The initiative is part of the provincial government’s efforts to modernise public services through digital technology and improve efficiency in government departments.
In another development, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has begun scrutinising the academic credentials of employees recruited in the Sindh Education Department between 1989 and 2020 as part of an ongoing verification process. Officials said the ongoing degree verification aims to identify employees with fake qualifications and ensure greater accountability within the education department.
