Maintaining a sharp memory is no longer a concern limited to older adults, as people of all ages are increasingly reporting forgetfulness and memory problems.
Health experts say that while genetic factors contribute to neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, lifestyle choices, diet and daily habits also play a vital role in supporting brain health.
According to experts, getting adequate and high-quality sleep is one of the most effective ways to strengthen memory. Research suggests that seven to nine hours of sleep each night helps the brain process and store information, while insufficient sleep can impair memory and learning.
Nutrition also plays an important role in cognitive health. Experts recommend consuming omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA found in fish oil, as they support brain function, improve heart health, reduce inflammation and may help lower stress levels.
Meditation is another habit linked to improved brain health. Regular meditation can reduce stress and blood pressure while strengthening areas of the brain associated with memory and learning, experts say.
Maintaining a healthy body weight is equally important. Studies have found that excess body weight may negatively affect genes linked to memory, while research involving adults aged 35 to 60 has identified a connection between obesity and reduced memory performance.
Experts also emphasise the importance of regular physical activity, noting that exercise benefits not only physical fitness but also cognitive function.
Research indicates that staying physically active can improve memory and overall brain performance across all age groups.
