PESHAWAR: A severe shortage of beds in government hospitals across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has been revealed, highlighting growing pressure on the public healthcare system and poor governance in the province.

According to available data, there are a total of 36,040 beds in government hospitals in the province. This translates to just one hospital bed for every 1,133 people, underscoring the scale of the shortage in public sector health facilities.

The situation is more alarming in Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) hospitals, where one bed is available for approximately 3,771 people, indicating a significant imbalance between patient load and available resources.

Health experts warn that the shortage is contributing to overcrowding, delayed treatment, and increased strain on doctors and medical staff. The figures have renewed calls for urgent expansion of hospital infrastructure, particularly the addition of beds and critical care facilities, to meet the healthcare needs of the growing population in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
